Do’s and Don’ts for Divorced Parents

A divorce can be a difficult time for everyone involved, especially for the children. As divorced parents, it is important to focus on what is best for your children and how to maintain a healthy co-parenting relationship. Here are some do’s and don’ts for divorced parents:
DO’S:
- Communicate openly and respectfully with each other about your children’s needs and schedules.
- Keep your children’s best interests in mind and work together to make decisions that benefit them.
- Follow the agreed parenting plan
- Be flexible and willing to adjust the parenting plan as your children’s needs change.
- Keep your children out of conflicts or disagreements you have with your ex-partner.
- Encourage your children to maintain a positive relationship with the other parent.
- Attend important events in your children’s lives together, such as sporting events or extracurricular activities.
DON’TS:
- Use your children as messengers or put them in the middle of conflicts or disagreements you have with your ex-partner.
- Speak negatively about your ex-partner to or in the presence of your children.
- Use your children as pawns to hurt or manipulate your ex-partner.
- Fail to comply with the parenting plan without first discussing it with your ex-partner.
- Involve your children in legal proceedings or disputes you have with your ex-partner.
- Make unilateral decisions about your children without consulting your ex-partner.
- Allow your own emotions and feelings to interfere with your children’s relationship with their other parent.
